Crops draw water and nutrients through their roots, so what happens in the soil shapes the harvest.
- Know your soil. A soil test from your nearest KVK or agriculture department tells you what your field needs, so you do not guess.
- Feed the soil. Farmyard manure, compost and crop residue add organic matter that holds water and supports soil life.
- Keep moisture even. Roots suffer when soil swings between very dry and waterlogged.
- Rotate crops. Where you can, change the crop each season to avoid building up the same problems.
General guidance. Your soil, crop and region may need a different approach, so ask your local agriculture officer.
